Collecting State Quarters

By Jerry J. Jansen On December 23, 2009 Under Art

The commemorative quarters collection has been in production since 1999. Since that time, nearly thirty-five billion commemorative quarters have been produced.

Now that they have stopped production of the state quarters, which ended in 2008, quarter lovers with complete collections of the commemorative editions have been left with nothing new to play with. That is until the United States Mint announced they will be issuing a new series of collectable quarters, named America the Beautiful Quarters.

These new quarters will be put into production starting in 2010 and continuing until at least 2021. The quarters will depict images from each of the 56 national parks with 5 new quarters being issued every year, and one in 2010. Similar to the state quarters, the National Park quarters will be issued in the order that they were deemed a national site.

The first five quarters released in 2010 will be from Hot Springs National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, and Mt. Hood National Forest. Although some parks are already depicted on their own state’s quarter, new images will be placed on the National Park version. As of right now the quantity of each quarter to be minted is unknown although one might speculate they will be close to the numbers issued each year for the State Quarter Collection. Also similarly to the state quarters, these America the Beautiful Quarters might be used to aid in teaching children about our national parks, through something as simple yet exciting as collecting coins.
